A thesis statement is defined as: "a sentence or short paragraph at the beginning of a thesis which describes the main idea explored in the text", while a thesis is "a piece of extended writing explaining the objectives, methodology, and findings of a research project."
The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) has a great webpage that specifically discusses how to create thesis statements.
The ebook How to Write a Thesis may also be helpful.
